Our Fellows
Blu Buchanan, PhD
Blu Buchanan is a University Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of North Carolina Asheville. They are a co-author of the chapter, "We Major: Black Trans Feminism Fights Back," in Black Feminist Sociology: Perspectives and Praxis (Routledge, forthcoming) and the recipient of the California Humanities Quick Grant to collect the oral histories of Black trans people in California and beyond. Their research focuses broadly on the role of violence in everyday life, which informs their twin research trajectories: 1) studying whiteness and masculinity as projects shaping intracommunal violence in the LGBT community and 2) the practices and habits Black trans folks develop to resist and decenter violence in their everyday lives. They received their PhD in sociology from the University of California, Davis.
